Shoot in inspiration from Jenny Sampson

Image
Shoot plan-  The ideas behind my work are to work in inspiration form Jenny Sampson. I wanted to capture a similar emotion and atmosphere as she manages to in her work. She creates compelling portraits of the local skaters to her which is an idea I would like to employ in my work. Her style of shooting on an old school camera in close up black and whites inspires me and is something I would like to explore in my own work. She shoots using wet plates but I will be using a large format film camera to incorporate her idea of using an old camera for contemporary work. I will be shooting skaters and surfers from Cornwall who shows interesting features and characteristics. I would like to create a series of images all in black and white of close up portraits of individuals. I will also be shooting using my old film camera so I get a variety of images. I am aiming to get detailed close up images of individuals, by using a large format camera I am hoping to achieve that. I will also be dev...

Jenny Sampson- Jenny Sampson is a portrait photographer from California who explored using wet plate collodion, traditional black and white and commissioned portraits. Wet plate collodion involves hand coating a metal plate with a slated collodion and then putting it in silver nitrate then as its still wet its put in the camera and the exposure is made. After washing the chemicals off it turns into a beautiful one of a kind metal photograph. It is a long exposure photograph so the model has to stay perfectly still. After reading Jenny's blog about shooting skaters I feel really inspired and feel like I relate to what she's saying which has inspired me to incorporate a similar subject into my own work. She write how she wanted to capture the rebellious group but after shooting them realised they aren't rebellious at all they are very curious and motivated in their sport.  The process captures the beauty of mixing contemporary, moder...

Shoot in inspiration from Xugeli

Image
Shoot plan- From this shoot I took inspiration photographer Xugeli who captures unique moment exploring light and creative compositions. He explores shooting bright direct sunlight, I usually avoid this because of glare on the camera however when used correctly it can look very effective. I decided to experiment with this as its a technique I haven't done before and I would like to add some variety to my images. For this shoot I decided to go to a famous local surf break-  Porthleven which rarely works however there are many spots and angles to shoot form here so I will be able to explore many different compositions. The starting ideas of this project is to find unique ways to capture surf and skate culture so looking into Xugeli's work really inspired me into finding new ways to capture it. I will he focusing in using slow shutter speed to create motion blur around the surfer. This is a technique I have used throughout my project and I really enjoying using it- it is very eff...

Xugeli Artist research

Image
Xugeli- Artist research- Xugeli is a photographer who captures unique surfing compositions around the world, he explores creative lighting and movement through his images. I feel inspired by his creative compositions and colours captured in his dusk images. He explores the figure through the human form and how movement alters it, surfing is really effective in capturing it. The main theme in most his images are the figure.  The pictorial space is often shallow as the image is very up close and doesn't include a background so there isn't much depth. The surfer is adjacent to the wave so it creates a sense of scale of how big the wave is. However some of his closer up images are very abstracted so it's hard to see a sense of scale. The genre of his images are seascapes and landscapes.  His use of slow shutter really abstracts the shape and form of the wave and figure. Xugeli shoots using a Digital camera and water housing- he experim...

In my personal investigation exploring surf and skate culture I decide to create a magazine to display and layout my images. During this I found I wanted to incinerate graphic design to make the magazine more interesting however I found it tricky to transfer drawings through scanning as the outcome wasn't as effective. I have decided to use creative pen tablet to draw straight onto layout. This will mean I can create my own fonts and illustrations. I started by searching into some of my favourite magazines for inspiration and found these two articles which explore similar techniques.  'Who is Michel Surman?' article and  '7 guys 1 winnebago' article, Foam Symmetry magazine This article is about talented board shaper Michel Surman. It tells his story of how he got into board shaping and his surf travels finding talented surfers with great style. They incorporate hand written...
