Carve Magazine

 Carve Magazine-

1.

2.

3.

For my recent project I am looking at different magazines and creating responses to each of there styles and layouts. Carve mag is one of Cornwalls biggest surf magazines so I had to take a peak into their styles. Originally I wasn't going to create a response to carve mag because it is very modern, based lots on advertising and commercial photography and not really my style. However, I though I would change it up and go out my comfort zone to see if I can adapt to their style and include mine slightly. Therefore I chose these pages which inspired me. Page 1, I chose this page because I liked the split sections of images and text. Although it is a minimalistic layout it is very effective in portraying a story in relation to the writing. I like how the images are placed next to the writing and how clear it is to read the writing. In carve mag they often highlight key phrases within the text and make them bigger as key bits to read- as shown on this page, which I think is really effective and draws your attention before you go and read the whole article. Page 2- This page has a similar layout to the first page however in this one I think the images used are really effective. The warm hues in one of the images contrasts really nicely against the cool tones in the image above. And the two images show different perspectives- one from outside the surf and one from inside which I think is very creative idea to look at it. Page 3- This is my favourite page from carve mag because the use of image and text is really effective together. The colour scheme of the whole page really draws me- The green and orange hues on the left and matching white areas. This works really effectively as a whole page spread. The layout of the text is interesting- lots of negative space and entered in small text centre of the page. I think this is quite unique and is something I will incorporate into my response. Overall I feel really inspired by Carve mags layout and techniques in fitting in lots of writing. My favourite areas are the use of colour and positioning of the writing in relationship to the imagery.
