Filming experiments

Experimenting filming around my garden- While in self isolation I decided to practise filming on my canon 7d, I have not filmed before is it was good to get used to the settings. I found it difficult to keep the camera still as I didn't have a tripod so the footage came out bit wobbly. I used iMovie to edit the clips together which worked out quite effectively, it was easy to edit on however I will be learning to use adobe premier when back in collage to learn techniques such as  colour correction, sound and editing clips together smoothly.  I used manual focus which worked well in blurring the background and focusing on the foreground. I am very pleased with how this little short clip has turned out and can't wait to experiment filming surfing. To improve I would use a tripod to make the movement smooth. Clips from last summer-              These 2 clips were taken last summer when I first found ...

Videography inspiration

Image
For my personal investigation I would like to explore videography and filming surfing. This is something I have not done before and is an idea I would like to incorporate into my personal investigation. I have watched many surfing clips and feel very inspired by the way filters capture style and lifestyle footage which combined makes compelling story. Some of these clips are made locally to me (mike lay is a local surfer in Sennen) which are really amazing clips and show the potential Cornwall has for filming and its uniques waves/ landscapes. These are some clips which I am inspired by: Sonic Souvenirs , Mike February  A road through Galicia, Luke Pilbeam featuring mike lay Road to the high-line, featuring Mike Lay Cynevin By Seth Hughes featuring Mike Lay Oscar Langburne, dancing barefoot In all of these clips they capture the ultimate style of surfing. These clips all really inspire me to create something similar, following a surfer and the lifestyle. The editing ...

Magazine 'smooth movers'

Image
Planning for writing an article- I have decided to create an article and magazine based off some of my recent shoots. I combined my favourite photos from recent shoots and wrote an article about social medias effect on surfing and how it has changed over the past few years. This is the process of making the mag and article.. Magazines im inspired by- 'Who is Michel Surman?' article , Foam Symmetry magazine This article is about talented board shaper Michel Surman. It tells his story of how he got into board shaping and his surf travels finding talented surfers with great style. The photography illustrates the text by showing a variety of images, from stylish surf photos and some contrasty board shaping behind the scenes. They links what they are talking about with the photos so the storyline matches as the photos are played out which works really effectively.  I feel most inspired by the layout of this article, I like the overlapping of photo...

Shoot in inspiration from Calin Jones

Image
Shoot plan- The ideas behind this shoot it to capture images inspired by Calin Jones and his unique compositions. He explores using shadows with the curvature of the skatepark concrete to create contrast and abstract shapes in his work. I am going to explore shooting on 35mm film using a vintage canon camera, to capture grain and the interesting tones film captures. I would like to experiment with developing my own film in collage to see the process of using the chemicals and techniques to develop film. I am intending to shoot on a sunny day so I can capture shadows and bold contrast between light and dark areas like Calin does. His work is effective because he mixes the old school cameras with modern skating- I like the contrast of styles which is something I would like to explore in this shoot. I would like to shoot a range of photos on black and white including some behind the scenes/ portraits, I will be shooting at St Ives skate park as it is new concrete and has interesting abstr...

Calin Jones

Image
Calin Jones- Calin Jones is a film photographer based in California. He takes candid black and white images of figures, surfing and skating.  The ideas are to take candid photos at a skate park in St Ives and using shadows and contrast to make the image more interesting. I will focus on the figures of the skater and the interesting shapes the body makes. Capturing the figure frozen in the movement, speed and momentum of skating. The contrast in these images created by shooting in  bright sunlight to create abstract shadows is really effective in making the image more interesting. I find the shadows created around the bowl of the skatepark and the ledges is really interesting as it adds depth to the photo and make unique compositions.  He includes relationships with adjacent objects to create a sense of scale, for example in the skatepark he includes a human form to show the large scale of the ramp compared. He shoots on black and white...

Shoot in inspiration from Nick Pumphrey

Image
Shoot plan- In this first shoot I am focusing on capturing a slow shutter surf photos which captures the movement and style of the surfer in inspiration from Nick Pumphrey's work. I decided to shoot in inspiration from Nick because of his inspiring use of complementary colours and unique compositions. For this shoot I aim to capture an image which captures the unique speed and style of the surfer and wave. The techniques I am going to use are slow shutter speed which I have worked on in my other shoots and they have all came out really effectively. I find it a very successful technique as it makes an image more interesting by capturing movement. I would like the shoot to portray images which have a really pleasing colour scheme (bright blues and whites) as this will work well with the other images aesthetically. This links to previous projects I have created which focused on surf photography when shooti...

Nick Pumphrey

Image
Nick Pumphrey artist research- For this artist research I will be focusing on Nick Pumphrey, I was inspired by his clever use of slow shutter speed. His use of colour and composition are really inspiring to me. He uses a range of complementary colours which is something I would like to incorporate into my images. He contrast warm and cool tones in his photos to enhance the image. Nick Pumphrey is a local photographer who is an inspiration to me living in St Ives.  For this analysis I will be focusing on the top image. In this beautiful image there is implied texture on the image through the use of grain. This creates an old school, vintage effect which I find makes the image more interesting. The pictorial space is quite shallow as the image is very close of so doesn't show the background which would give the image more depth however due to the closeness the figure gives a sense of scale to the size of the wave. Due to the figure in relations...

Shoot in inspiration from Hiroshi Sugimoto

Image
Shoot plan- The idea behind this shoot was to work in inspiration from Hiroshi Sugimoto, who explores the  main idea that photos are a way of preserving a moment and picture in time almost like a time machine . Therefor I will be focusing on using a slow shutter similar to Hiroshi's work. Although Hiroshi uses a large format camera and film explored for seven hours I decided I could try and incorporate similar ideas using a digital camera and incinerate my theme of surfing into the images. I will look at surf scenes from a different angles and aim to capture specific transient moments to create unique photos. His use of black and white contrasted images inspires me so I will be incorporating that into the editing process. I am intending to experiment with slow shutter speed and a 75-300mm lens so I can try to capture super close up perspectives. I have previously tried to capture slow shutter images but always wanted to get a s...

Shoot in inspiration from Woody Gooch

Image
Shoot plan- In this shoot I will be working in inspiration from Woody Gooch, after researching his work I felt very inspired by his eerie black and white photos. His use of reflections and lighting works really effectively to emit emotion which is something I would like to employ in my work. The ideas behind this shoot was to focus on reflections and contrasting light and dark areas.  I wanted to capture photos that have strong atmospheres and emotion. I wanted to include techniques inspired by Woody Gooch using different unique compositions from different angles and capturing strong emotion. I have previously conducted a shoot in inspiration from Woody Gooch which turned out effectively however I would like to expand on that try to improve from the previous images taken last year- this will be interesting to see the development in my work. After looking at his photos of reflection creating eerie atmosphere it inspired me to do this shoo...

Hiroshi Sugimoto

Image
Hiroshi Sugimoto- Hiroshi Sugimoto is a well known black and white photographer from Tokyo. He captures highly stylised images and explores ideas and relationships between 'photography and time, art and science, imagination and reality.' Hiroshi main idea is that photos are a way of preserving a moment and picture in time almost like a time machine which is shown in his work. Hiroshi captures different textures throughout his work from rough seascapes to completely smooth speed  blurrs. The pictorial space in his images is shallow as he does not create the illusion on depth as there's is no foreground and background the images are fairly 2d. The sense of scale is very hard to work out as there are no adjacent objects to compare for scale. For example the top tow images capturing the vast open ocean the sense of scale is unknown so it manipulates the true size of it. Hiroshi shoots using a large format camera with 8 x 10 black ...
