Woody Gooch
Woody Gooch artist research-
I have chosen Woody Gooch to research into as his moody black and white photos which emit great emotion and feeling which inspires me. For example the photo at the bottom, such stillness yet a lonesome vibe is created in this photo. This photo is really inspiring and is something I would like to portray in my work. I will shoot lots of black and white as well as colour to see the difference. Woody Gooch is a abstract surf photographer based around the world. He captures amazing abstract photographs featuring surf and landscape capturing waves from all landscapes, using in water and out water photography. Each of his photos portray different atmospheres, he plays around with light and dark and some black and white. He creates intense atmospheres in each of his photos by using composition, light and shadows. In my personal investigation I will be working on action/ seascape photography in inspiration from Woody Gooch. I would like to put his elements of interesting perspectives and angles of surfing into my own work. He creates very interesting photos each giving a different composition or atmosphere. I would also really like to incorporate similar colour themes as he does, really intensifying the blue and using light colour schemes, he also uses black and white which had a very cool contrast effect. Woody Gooch's photography does not have a reoccurring images, each image shows a completely different angle or way of showing surfing. the only re occurring theme is the sea and the ocean. The depth of field varies in each of his images but I will be focusing on the image in the middle, where the image illustrates a shallow depth of field as it focuses directly onto the surfers foot whilst having a the waves face in the background. The sense of scale of the wave is unknown as it doesn't have anything in the image that you can scale it against. This image has been constructed from a slow shutter speed camera in a water housing as this persecutive is coming from below the wave. This photo does not fall into a certain genre but is taken in portrait or could have been taken in landscape and then flipped. the image is presented in a very creative way which I haven't seen any other photographer do with their work. I work very effectively against the plain, light back ground contrasting against the deep darkness of the looming wave. Woody Gooch creates an action shot taken with a very fast shutter speed to capture the full detail o the wave as it breaks. This image shows a very abstract/ distinct shape of the wave as it perfectly curled over as if its feeling away. The tonal value in this image is very large as it has the light parts of the image lightened but not too bright so therefore it creates a gloomy atmosphere and the dark areas of the wave are very dark who creates contrast between the background and the foreground. The light areas on the waves are very bright to show the detail of the wave. I would like to incorporate this interesting perspective/ composition into my work to make it very unique.
