Shoot in inspiration from Callum Morse
Shoot plan-
In this shoot i am looking to capture the motion of the sea and the speed of the waves in inspiration from Callum Morse. I think it is a really successful way to show a sunset and the waves which is shown from a different point of view. By using a slow shutter speed to create these images it will create a really interesting motion blur effect. I am intending to use a slow shutter speed and then experiment with using a tripod and using free hand to create this blur effect. From the past i have tried to create similar photos and have found that using free hand and take the photograph as i am moving side ways works really effectively and creates a very abstract photo. I will take a series of photos at sunset/ sunrise to capture the beautiful orange/ pink colors behind, to incorporate similar colors that Callum Morse uses. I will incorporate the complementary colors into my work through blue and orange tones. This shoot will link to my previous work done in inspiration from Woody Gooch which has a similar subject of the ocean but also focuses on showing the ocean/ surfers from a different unique angle and perspective. I will be shooting in a mixture of portrait and landscapes to develop my ideas to which i find more effective. Using a Tripod will help to create the smooth lines across the image, which will create a really effective effect. I will be taking these images from a range of perspectives, some from higher up looking down on the ocean and some from a lower view as the waves break across the beach. This shoot will take around about an hour to capture the perfect sets coming through at the same time as the sunset. I will not be needing to use any models for this shoot as the subject is landscapes/ seascapes. My equipment list: camera, battery, memory card and tripod. I will have to wait for the waves/ swell to be correct before i take these images and to get the tide times correct with the sunset times. The conditions for this image will need a clear sky so that there can be a sunset but i can work with other conditions (except rain.) I will be using natural lighting for this and will be shooting using manual so the settings will vary while i am there.

These images were edited in Lightroom. I increased the brightness slightly as these were taken at late evening so the lighting was very dull, however it took way some of the colour of the sunset. I then increased highlights as the bottom half of the image was very dark, I wanted to make the reflections on the water brighter so they stand out against the waves. The contrast has worked really effectively to juxtapose the bright sunset with darker water. I then slightly increased saturation so the colour is intensified. When editing I enhanced the complementary colours to create an aesthetic image. when editing I also increased the brightness and contrast to enhance the difference between the light and dark areas of the image. I wanted to enhance the lines so I increased the black parts of the image on the wave to make the wave look more defined.
settings used- ISO 100, 110mm zoom, f/4.5, 1/20 seconds

Evaluation-
The starting points off this project was to capture the motion and speed of the waves as they break in sets. I was inspired by Callum Morse to create these set of images as he captures the speed and motion of waves really effectively. His colour schemes also inspired me to create similar work through using complementary colours. I think the images have come out really successful with the colours that were created and how the lines have blurred. I really like how this set of images have come out and the colours that have been created. Throughout this project I have learnt that it is important to try and capture things from out of the ordinary from different and unique angles and perspectives to create work different to any other photographer. I have really enjoyed experimenting with this technique (using slow shutter speed) and developing my skills using it. I found that as I shot while using a slow shutter I became more confident using it at the end of the shoot (which was when I got my favourite image of the shoot) rather than at the start. I developed my skills by experimenting with different speeds of shutter and constantly changing ISO and appature until I found the correct settings on manual. I started by using shutter at 50' with a higher number appiture from (13-19 depending on the light) and then adding ISO (140-200) towards the end of the shoot when it was getting darker lighting. I don usually like using ISO as it creates grainy effect in the images but in this shoot I had to use it to lighten the image. I found that as you take the images you have to turn your body in a quick motion to get the blurred effect. through developing this technique I found that you have to turn sideways in aperefctly straight line to get the image just right otherwise the lines go in all different directions. I am very pleased with what has been produced and I think the images work very well as a set. In the future I will develop these skills of using a slower shutter and I would like to experiment with using a tripod to create similar images but without physically moving the camera. If I did the project again I would just experiment with using different location with different forecasts of waves and different lighting, it would be cool to experiment with a sunrise instead of a sunset or try in bright daylight and see what effect it has.
Final Favourite-
This is my favourite photo from this shoot as the speed blur came out perfectly. As I was hand holding the camera I managed to move it perfectly as the waves moved towards the shore to get defined lines. The horizon almost blends into the sunset smoothly, the contrast between the bold bright sunset on the dark looming sea works really effectively. I am very pleased with how this image has turned out and how the editing has been used to enhance the image further.
