Statement of intent-

My personal investigation is about surf and skate culture and looking into its role and significance in Cornwall. I have chosen this theme because it is something I am really passionate about. From growing up in St Ives I have constantly been surrounded by talented surfers, skaters and photographers who have always inspired me to love surf photography. My project will be personal to me as I will be capturing places where I have grown up and documenting the local surf community. I will be looking at a mixture of photographers and film makers most who are local to the areas. For example surf photographers from Cornwall such as Nick Pumphrey, Megan Hemsworth, Toby butler, Katie Rae, Calin Jones, Alias Babnik, Woody Gooch and Perry Gershkow.  Local film makers such as Seth Hughes will inspire my videography process. To show development of my ideas I will be experimenting with new techniques I haven't tried before such as film making as this is something I feel really inspired to try. I will also experiment with capturing stills on film and learning the development process using a mixture of black and white and colour film. Practical considerations I need to consider are finding and using the correct equipment, as well as finding editing softer to use. I will be using a range of film cameras, video cameras and using different lenses I will also try out using a tripod to make the video process steadier and when taking slow shutter photos. My intention for this project is to create a variety of outcomes from stills/ behind the scenes telling the story of the lifestyle of a surfer, captivating portraits in black and white, videos, slow shutter photos and skate shoots. For my project I will be looking into not only shooting surfing and skating but the background story behind it, the meaning of the area and how important it is to the community. I will be shooting on a mixture of equipment so I can get a variety of photos and experiment with lots of different cameras and lenses.  I will also do some interviews of the surfers to give more of a backstory and the lifestyle of surfing. I will be shooting stills of the areas and some portraits in black and white to add a mixture of photos.

Magazine- Evaluation- The starting points of this project was to experiment with creating a magazine in inspiration from some of my favourite mags. I wanted to explore a range of styles and layouts so I looked a multiple magazines each with a different style such as: CarveMag, Wavelength and Foam Symmetry Mag. It was really inspiring to look deeper into these magazines, looking into their unique layouts and why they have placed images and words where they have. This helped me understand layouts better and how to create an effective page spread- which images will go together, which colour and type font and the use of complementary colour. Carvemag inspired me because of the ability to layout a page with photos which compliment the article and fit into together. They also manage to fit in large bodies of writing into of photos depending on the composition of the image itself. Foam Symmetry magazine response

 My response to Foam Symmetry magazine- The starting points of this project was to look at multiple magazines and create responses to them adapting to each Individual style. For this section I decided to look at Foam Symmetry Magazine based in Newquay is a magazine I have always got copies of and love reading because of their minimalistic style which really inspires me. After looking closely into what makes their style so unique I took a few of there pages I felt most inspired by and created this response.   A main style that reoccurs in foam symmetry is layering- of images and text. This is something I wanted to explore in my own work so I created layout that incorporated this. From this experiment I learned that pairing contrasting images works really well to create a layout. Foam symmetry magazine

 Foam symmetry-  1.  2.  3.  Foam symmetry is a surf magazine which explore surf craft, travel and immersive stories. I have complied some of my favourite pages from their magazine (issue 20) which inspire me. The main reason I chose to explore this magazine is because of their creative layouts and beautiful images. Page1, I chose this page because I felt very inspired by their use of handwriting overlapped on pictures, I think this creates a really effective and unique outcome. The layering of images with contrasting colour schemes (black and white and bright colour ) looks really effective and id something I would like to try in my own layouts. They also use contrasting fonts on this page- large handwritten, flows writing next to neat small type font. I find the overall layout of this page very inspiring and is something I would like to explore.
