Magazine- Evaluation- The starting points of this project was to experiment with creating a magazine in inspiration from some of my favourite mags. I wanted to explore a range of styles and layouts so I looked a multiple magazines each with a different style such as: CarveMag, Wavelength and Foam Symmetry Mag. It was really inspiring to look deeper into these magazines, looking into their unique layouts and why they have placed images and words where they have. This helped me understand layouts better and how to create an effective page spread- which images will go together, which colour and type font and the use of complementary colour. Carvemag inspired me because of the ability to layout a page with photos which compliment the article and fit into together. They also manage to fit in large bodies of writing into of photos depending on the composition of the image itself. Wavelength Magazine inspired me because of the use of graphic design/ poster type pages which explore colour and ...

Carve Mag response

My response to Carvemag-    In response to looking at Carve mag and its layout I decided to create my own magazine layouts inspired by them. After looking at the magazine and exploring similar compositions I came up with these three pages. The starting points of this little project was to create a magazine out of my work from this personal investigation so far to explore creating compositions and layouts using adobe indesign. These pages were inspired by Crave mag and their minimalistic layouts. I have learnt how to use adobe indesign and have learnt how to adapt my style to fit the style of other brands which I think is a important skill. My favourite page from this section is the first one- this is because the page is full and the image looks really effective as a whole spread in coordination with the writing. I think the positioning and font of the writing works really effectively to bring this page together. The other two pages I found less successful as I c...

Carve Magazine

Carve Magazine- 1.  2.  3.  For my recent project I am looking at different magazines and creating responses to each of there styles and layouts. Carve mag is one of Cornwalls biggest surf magazines so I had to take a peak into their styles. Originally I wasn't going to create a response to carve mag because it is very modern, based lots on advertising and commercial photography and not really my style. However, I though I would change it up and go out my comfort zone to see if I can adapt to their style and include mine slightly. Therefore I chose these pages which inspired me. Page 1, I chose this page because I liked the split sections of images and text. Although it is a minimalistic layout it is very effective in portraying a story in relation to the writing. I like how the images are placed next to the writing and how clear it is to read...

Foam Symmetry magazine response

Image
My response to Foam Symmetry magazine- The starting points of this project was to look at multiple magazines and create responses to them adapting to each Individual style. For this section I decided to look at Foam Symmetry Magazine based in Newquay is a magazine I have always got copies of and love reading because of their minimalistic style which really inspires me. After looking closely into what makes their style so unique I took a few of there pages I felt most inspired by and created this response.   A main style that reoccurs in foam symmetry is layering- of images and text. This is something I wanted to explore in my own work so I created layout that incorporated this. From this experiment I learned that pairing contrasting images works really well to create a layout. For the first page I layered a colourful, less defined image (due to speed blur) with black and w...

Foam symmetry magazine

Foam symmetry-  1.  2.  3.  Foam symmetry is a surf magazine which explore surf craft, travel and immersive stories. I have complied some of my favourite pages from their magazine (issue 20) which inspire me. The main reason I chose to explore this magazine is because of their creative layouts and beautiful images. Page1, I chose this page because I felt very inspired by their use of handwriting overlapped on pictures, I think this creates a really effective and unique outcome. The layering of images with contrasting colour schemes (black and white and bright colour ) looks really effective and id something I would like to try in my own layouts. They also use contrasting fonts on this page- large handwritten, flows writing next to neat small type font. I find the overall layout of this page very inspiring and is something I would like to explore. Page 2- This page incorporates a composition I haven't seen before so I feel its very unique and inspired me. Here t...

Wavelength magazine response

Wavelength magazine response- After looking into wavelength magazine and their style and layout techniques I decided to create some work in response to this. I have been very interested in exploring compositions and layouts after exploring editorial photography and making my own magazine in first year. Therefore I thought it would be interesting to expand on this and develop my skills. I will be using adobe indesign and illustrator to create these pages.  (not finished yet) Evaluation-

Wavelength magazine

Image
Wavelength article inspiration- 1. 2. 3. 4. These pages a from various articles fro Wavelength surf magazine, I have compiled my favourite pages which inspire me most. Starting from the top (page 1) - this page really inspires me from the insane composition of the image against the text on the left. The overall layout of the page is very effective as well as the use of colour to enhance the text next to the image. They used a sharper font to contrast against the blurred background which makes it easier to read and stand out against the image. Page 2- This double page spread inspires me because of the interesting composition of images across the blank page. It is unique as each image is a different size- none of them lineup however it still work really effectively. The images themselves are very effectively composed and each show a different scene which all follow the similar theme of surfing but emit an eerie lonely atmosphere. The use of positive and negative space ...
